Common side effects of finasteride can be scary

Some choose to use finasteride as a hair loss treatment, but there are side effects to be aware of.

Some of the leading brand names for the generic drug finasteride include Propecia, Proscar or Propecia Pro-Pak. Though finasteride is typically used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, it is commonly used to stimulate hair growth. The drug works by controlling the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which regulates the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT has been shown to be a leading cause of hair loss in men and women. By reducing DHT levels in the body, those taking finasteride experience hair growth.

However, as with any drug, there are limitations and side effects. It can take three to six months to see hair growth results, and any growth you do see will stop as soon as you quit using the drug. The drug is also just for men.

Common side effects of finasteride include:

  • Dizziness
  • Itchy skin
  • Impotence
  • Reduced libido
  • Swelling of hands and/or feet
  • Headaches
  • Cold sweats/chills
  • Sudden weight gain/loss
  • Confusion
  • Skin redness or rashes

If you are taking finasteride, be sure to talk to your doctor if you experience any of these side effects or anything unusual. For those considering finasteride for hair growth, be sure you understand all of the possible effects.

For many, a drug-free treatment is best for hair loss or thinning.
