‘Tackle balding hair early’ says celebrity hairdresser

More than 50% of men over the age of 50 experience some hair loss. It’s just a fact of life.

Jamie Stevens is a three-time winner of the ‘Men’s Hairdresser of the Year’ at HJ’s British Hairdressing awards, and a celebrity hairdresser working with top actors like Leonardo di Caprio, Hugh Grant, Olly Murs and Callum Best. When asked about hair loss in men, Stevens said: “Tackle it early and you can hang on to [your] hair longer.”

Jamie Stevens hairdresserWe know we can’t change our genetics or stop the clock on aging, but there are tips to ensure healthy hair growth. Stevens offered these four tips for male hair loss:

  1. Get the right haircut
  2. Try going darker
  3. Buy a hair volumizing product
  4. Incorporate vitamins and minerals into your diet

The right cut

If your hair is already thinning, Stevens’ tip is to cut the back and sides so that it’s shorter than the top. As a result, it will make “the top area look thicker and fuller.”

Hair coloring

Excessive styling and hair coloring can be damaging to your hair over the long-term. But if you’ve never colored your hair before, a dye job is a short-term hair boost. A darker color makes hair look thicker; the color actually causes the hair shaft to become thicker.

 Volumizing products

All men should have a good hair care routine to ensure healthy hair. Stevens has a range of products that help “thicken, disguise and style thinning hair.”

Vitamins and minerals

“Support your hair through diet,” says Stevens. There are several vitamins that specifically support and promote hair growth, including vitamins A, B and C. Other nutrients that are good for your hair are  zinc, copper, selenium, iodine and silica. A hair growth supplement is an easy way to make sure these vitamins and nutrients are a part of your diet.
