Essential hair care tips for men

Manscaping. Grooming. Whatever you call it, just be sure to do it. We can’t stop the clock on aging, but a regular hair care routine can reverse hair thinning and hair loss that can make you look older.

8 easy hair care tips

Don’t over-wash your hair

Morning shower. After the gym. Before your date that night. A common mistake many guys make is washing their hair too much. Try to keep your hair washing to two or three times a week, and be sure to follow up with a good conditioner to keep your scalp healthy.

Use a clarifying shampoo

When you do wash your hair, though, use a clarifying shampoo. Over time, your hair can start to look dull as a result of styling product buildup and environmental pollutants. A good clarifying shampoo with cut through the grime and give your hair a deep clean leaving it healthy and glossy.

Protect your hair from chlorine

When the heat rises, nothing beats a refreshing dip in the pool. But the chlorine in pools can be disastrous for your scalp and cause your hair to become dry and brittle. While you could wear a swimming cap, we know nobody wants to be that guy. So before you jump into the pool, wet your hair and apply a light coat of conditioner to your hair for added protection.

Let your hair air dry

Wet hair tends to be weaker and more vulnerable to damage. Instead of grabbing the towel and aggressively rubbing your hair until it’s dry, try letting your hair air dry or just lightly pat it dry.

Keep it trimmed

Although a haircut may sound counterintuitive to grow your hair, getting your hair cut regularly actually encourages healthy hair growth. For some guys, a trip every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal. Talk to your barber or hair stylist on what is a good schedule for your hair type.

Take a cold shower

Hot water can dry out our skin, including the scalp, and strip the hair of its natural oils. Rinsing your hair and showering with cool water can tighten your pores and keep them from getting clogged. Your hair can appear shinier and stronger.

Stay natural

Don’t be tempted to use dyes to keep the gray hair to a minimum. Any chemicals introduced to your hair – even just one time – can damage your follicles forever.

Hats off

Traction alopecia is a form of gradual hair loss that’s mainly caused by pulling force of the hair. Regularly wearing caps or pulling your hair into a ponytail or bun can cause this type of hair loss.
